A month or so before our daughter was born, I had a nursery filled with beautiful baby clothes, sleepers, blankets and linens needing to be washed and put away into her brand new dresser and freshly painted closet. I knew that babies required a laundry soap or detergent more gentle than most and was planning on cloth diapering as well so I needed a laundry soap that was going to do the job and get rid of unwanted stains, odours and germs but be gentle enough against my new baby’s delicate skin.
I’m a researcher by nature. Both my husband and I research basically everything we buy and everything we do, looking for the best “bang for our buck” as well as positive consumer product reviews. We have OGD. (Obsessive Google Disorder, Duh!) Becoming a parent has taken this need to research to a whole new level. It’s a little more pressure to be researching the best product for making your baby’s first food or the bottle you will choose to feed your baby with or what carseat he or she will ride in than it is to be researching which movie we should watch Friday night or where we should go for dinner. I’m ashamed (but secretly proud) of how many hours I spent building my baby gift registry for my baby shower. I researched and read countless reviews on every single item. It’s hard to research products you know nothing about when you know next to nothing about newborn babies or what they need! The Babies ‘R’ Us website is overwhelming to say the least. But that’s a blog for another day. I digress.
Back to the soap. I wanted something that would work well, be fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, natural, affordable (since I would be doing more laundry than I ever imagined), work on cloth diapers (which need a soap that won’t leave a residue and affect their absorbency),be tough on stains but gentle on delicate baby skin and work in a High Efficiency washing machine. Not too much to ask, right? My search began.
When my sister told me about Charlie’s Soap, my search was ended. She had been using it since she discovered it a few years ago while working in a baby boutique that sold it when she was in college. She spoke highly of its ability to clean clothing while adding that it is fragrance-free, natural, biodegradable, lasts forever and makes your clothes last forever too. Could it be true?
We decided to order some online. By “some,” I mean the 4 gallon tub of it. We had just purchased a new High Efficiency washer and dryer so decided to switch over to Charlie’s Soap as soon as we started using the new machine. Let me tell you, our clothes, our linens, our towels, our blankets have never felt so clean. There is no fragrance and no residue. They are just clean. When you are used to other detergents and fabric softeners, it’s hard to explain the feeling and smell of bare, naked clean but it’s a great smell (or lack of smell.)
Charlie’s Soap not only cleans your laundry but also removes all of the previous residues that other detergents have left behind. One tablespoon of soap will wash an entire load of laundry. No fabric softener required. Our laundry is cleaner, softer and lasts longer.
With two babies, I have faced my share of stains. My 17 month old can make a raspberry look like she had just left the scene of a homicide and my son can poop fluorescent colours that can cause instant stains in his sleepers that may or may not be radioactive. I’m not sure. Charlie’s Soap is tough on stains. They sell a laundry booster as well that I may purchase someday but so far I haven’t needed it. I’ve found success in making a paste out of my regular Charlie’s Soap and rubbing it into the tough stains before washing but usually I just throw it in my regular cycle, cross my fingers and hope for the best. I’m always amazed at this soap’s ability to clean even the dirtiest of messes. The odd time there is something that needs to be rewashed and of course there is the odd onesie that faced an explosion when we weren’t at home so it couldn’t be rinsed right away and consequentially couldn’t be saved but for the most part, Charlie’s Soap is incredible. Affordable. Effective. Clean. Natural. Biodegradable. How many other products out there are good for your skin, your baby’s skin and the environment?
You know that huge scoop of laundry detergent you normally have to add to your load of laundry plus fabric softener? When using Charlie’s Soap, you only have to use a tablespoon of soap. It is that effective! How many other products can astound and amaze you with just a tablespoon-sized dose? I’m not even sure moonshine could compete. Nyquil maybe but still. Awesomeness. And you don’t use fabric softener. Another bonus! According to the Charlie’s Soap website, softeners are used to mask the residues left behind by detergent. Charlie’s Soap cleans right to the fiber. Clean. Clean. Clean. No residue!
When we bought our 4 gallon tub of soap, we made the decision to wash all of our laundry with it rather than just the baby stuff. It just made sense to us. After all, we would be holding the baby against our clothing, laying baby on our bed, on blankets, etc. and wanted to ensure that our baby would not come in contact with any chemicals or harsh fragrances that could cause a reaction. There are enough new textures and smells for a little newborn baby to experience post-birth, afterall. So, at the end of May 2012 we cracked open our big, white tub and made the switch, no looking back! We haven’t used another laundry detergent or any fabric softener since and have no regrets. Not only that, but we’ve added a second baby to the mix which adds approximately 4 million extra loads of laundry to the routine and I am amazed to share that this weekend I will be scraping the bottom of that very same tub of Charlie’s Soap we bought back in May 2012. We just ordered our second tub last week! One 4 gallon tub has lasted us almost 18 months. I do laundry constantly. With 2 adults and 2 babies in the house, my washing machine is basically always running. Aside from the loads of laundry a family of 4 can create, we must also account for the 2-3 loads each week that have to be rewashed because I got too caught up in baby chaos to move them from the washer to the dryer before mildew set in. It’s always a challenge. I’m not sure exactly how many loads of laundry I got from my single tub of Charlie’s (we’re on a first name basis at this point) but needless to say, I’m impressed. It just kept going and going. For at least 8-9 months, Hubby and I have been placing unofficial bets on how much longer it will last (We’re well aware that we need lives. You don’t need to say it!) because it seemed like it was half full forever. (Of course it was half full and not half empty!)
Charlie’s Soap rocks. If you’re looking to make the switch, have clean clothes, save the environment and basically never lug a box of laundry detergent and jug of fabric softener into your cart again, Charlie’s Soap is worth checking out. One of my favourite bonuses of using this soap is skipping the laundry detergent aisle entirely every single time I get groceries. There’s something liberating in that alone!
